Just under a week into the 2024 Paris Games, Anthony Edwards‘ supreme confidence has already been on display.
Ahead of the opening ceremony last Friday, Stephen Curry approached the Minnesota Timberwolves guard alongside the U.S. women’s table tennis team, who said they would beat Edwards 21-0 in a match.
Edwards said, “I don’t believe it,” before promising he’d get at least one point. The table tennis athletes responded with a challenge.
“There’s only one way to find out,” they said.
On Monday, Edwards got an up-close look at why the team was unafraid. He attended American Lily Zhang’s match as she defeated Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi in Round 3 of women’s singles.
A four-time Olympian, Zhang advanced to the round of 16 for the first time with Edwards cheering in the crowd. After Zhang won a point in the match, the camera panned to Edwards standing up and yelling.
Zhang will play the winner of South Korea’s Shin Yu-bin and Hungary’s Georgina Póta. Edwards and Team USA next face South Sudan on Wednesday.
